Used Horse Trailers

There are a lot of reasons you can get more for your money buying used horse trailers.

Having to transport your horse can be a pleasure or a nightmare. The trailer you use makes all the difference in the world. Quite often you can find used horse trailers for sale with more features than a new one for the same price or even less money.

The most important feature of any trailer is safety and comfort for the horse. The extra things like changing rooms, and sleeping quarters, make it better for you. All trailers have certain criteria they should come up to.

No matter what style of used horse trailers or price range, there are certain things you should inspect and be certain are in good working condition.

All electrical lights and connections should be in good order and working. No bare wires or sloppy tape should be on the wires. Brake lights, turn signals, and running lights should be in proper working condition. If the trailer is equipped with brakes they should also be inspected and tested before going on the road.

Door handles and latches should be operating properly and not loose or rattling. Locks should have all their keys and also working as designed. Cross tie anchors and other hardware should be firmly attached and in good condition.

Loading ramps and gates should operate as designed and their planking or decking should be strong and not deteriorated.

Don't forget that used horse trailers may look good overall but there are many vital parts that you have to take apart to inspect. If the seller does not guarantee things, and even if he does, it is up to you to inspect these items personally.

Wheel bearings need to be inspected on each wheel for grease and unusual sounds. Also check to see if they are worn or seated properly. They should have fresh grease and rotate smoothly with no wobble. Do not inspect just one and assume all are in good condition. You need to inspect all the wheels on the trailer.

Check the spare tire and make sure it is in good condition and the proper type for your trailer. The wrong type, or no spare, will leave you on the side of the road for hours. This can result in a very dangerous situation for you and your horses.

The hitch is another part of used horse trailers that calls for careful inspection. It should operate smoothly and be of the proper size for the weight of the trailer. The tongue should be undamaged and the wheel jack should operate freely and have no damage. Connections for the electric lights and brakes should be in good and working condition.

Anyone who is selling used horse trailers should have no objection to you making these inspections and will be willing to help you do it. The better condition the trailer is in the less time the inspection will take.

If you are a handyman you may not mind buying used horse trailers that need repair. Just remember if you are pulling it to your place or shop with things not in proper working condition you could have an accident or be charged with pulling a trailer in faulty condition.

The type of hauling you are doing may determine the style of trailer you are purchasing but circumstances do change. When shopping for used horse trailers don't rule out what kind of transporting you may be doing in the future.

Buying used horse trailers can save you a lot of money if you shop wisely.
